Why is experience necessary? 

In this business, everyone thinks they can install window film even homeowners with the Home Depot do-it-yourself kits.  This is a crazy thought.  How many times have you seen someone go to the hospital to purchase surgical tools to do perform an open heart surgery?  The outcome could eventually become a disaster.  The analogy is a bit exaggerated, however, window film is similar.  A person needs the right amount of experience, tools and knowledge of film to glass recommendations etc.  Otherwise you might just break every window in your house worst case situation or at the very least have a very poor quality installation to be embarrassed about with no warranty.

I do believe that anyone can install window film with enough experience.   I also believe, any person has the ability to do accomplish anything they put their mind to.  The bottom line is an inexperienced window film installer can cost you a lot of money or if you are a do it yourself kind you could cause your own misery.

The problem arises when the installer does not take regard to the quality of his/her work or not having enough knowledge about the products he/she installs.  We have seen window film break windows in homes and buildings when improper films were recommended for a particular type of glass or location.  This is where knowing your product is key to the installation.   

We had a Casino purchasing agent request window film be installed on a wired safety window.  We explained that this is not accepted within the industry and should not be done because it would cause the glass to break.  We did not even give an estimate.  I certainly did not want to lose business but this is where honesty is the best policy.

Needless to say, they were not happy with my answer and they called an inexperienced installer.  After a few weeks went by the casino employee called us back to inform us that we had correctly advised them of the outcome.  Unfortunately, they disregarded our warning and went ahead with the installation of film to wired safety glass and the window broke.  They were very impressed with our knowledge of the products and they appreciated our honesty even though they had the work done anyway.  This resulted in many more repeat jobs because they were impressed with our knowledge and experience.

Sometimes it takes a bad experience for someone to understand the value an experienced installer and a professional that knows the product.
